BEN BOLTON (10), JOHL YOUNGER (12) and CHRIS LILLY (15) have made their way into history books by becoming the first Australian Junior 8-Ball Champions. Ben Bolton of W.A. nicknamed the Iceman, gained this with his cool confident approach and playing ability at the table.

He has considerable talent and tactical mind which helped him outscore his opponents in every game he played. He won every game in his tournament and in the semifinals convincingly defeated Vic. Sean Partridge 4/0 and in the final beat S.A. Corey Gordon 5/0.

Johl Younger of Bachus Marsh Vic. proved his win in the Victorian State Titles last month was well deserved when he defeated the best U/ ISs in Australia and became the National Champion. He went through the tournament undefeated and in the semi finals he met Aaron Mahoney (1990 U/12 Vic State Champion) winning 4/2.

Then in the finals he met Lee Mitchell (U l5 Vic State Champion 89 90). runner-up this year. This was the hardest match with a see-sawing action between the two players of six frames before Johl finally took control of the game in the eighth frame winning 5/3 In the closests of finals.
Chris Lilly of Victoria provided the surprise of the tournament, after being defeated 1/3 in the first round by George Platt W.A. he won the next match to go through as Rj up to meet Robert Norman in the semi-finals.

This is the second time these palyers have met this year with Robert narrowly defeating Chris in the State Finals. This proved to be the closest match of the tournament with both players of equal ability.

Chris finally won on the last frame 4/3 narrowly defeating Robert and winning his way to the finals. Travis Crawley of N.T. made his way to the finals by coming second in a three way playoff against Robert Norman Vic. and Louis Condo S.A. He then went on to defeat George Platt WA 4/1.

The final was an anticlimax as Chris hit top form he tied up each frame with white ball control and straegic play, these tactics worked, frustrating Travis so Christopher easliy won the match 5/0.

The excellent umpiring throughout the event was due to three fully qualilied umpires from the Junior ranks. Pranav Munim (15), James Thornton (14) and Sandra Tilly ( 16). Also senior qualifted umpires Jason Sach, Bert Klubel Neil Thornton, Peter Lilly ard as always Les Mitchell. The dress standard and table ettiquette of all players and unpires provided a wondeful spectacle for the big audience thatcame to see the match.

This included local people, pennant and state players and top officials in the sport. The Mayor of the City of Croydon opened the tournament at the venue which had been donated by the city. At the closure by Margarite Lopez it was announced N.T. is to approach the National body to hold the Junior Titles in N.T. next year. This year national included a strong contingent from W.A. players from S.A. and N.T.

Hopefully the Senior bodies in all states will get their act together by next year and meet us in Darwin. Juniors are on the go!

On behalf of the Pool Victoria Committee, 1welcome everyone to the Forest Hill Chase Shopping Centre and
the Australian Eight Ball Federation's 2003 National Junior Championships. Thank you for your participation,
your interest and support. It's what makes all of the effort put into getting this ready, worth while.

All players have earned the right to participate by proving to be the best in their State. Now they are about to
challenge for the right to be the best in Australia. I wish them all the best of luck in their endeavors.

A big thank-you to those who have helped me in getting this event ready for today's opening. Those people
'are Santo Zappia for gathering sponsorship and the support of shopkeepers to supply discount vouchers
throughout the event and to Heather Zappia for just being there and guiding me through. Without them it
would have been just me and even though J have done wonders in keeping Pool Victoria going over the past
nine months, I could not have done this one without them. Also thanks to Alcocks for the supply' and setting
up of the tables and Consolidate Leisure and Sport for their support.

Another big thank-you goes to Daryl Kee, marketing manager of this magnificent Forest Hill Chase Shopping
Centre, for being so easygoing and supportiye of us holding the event here.

Message from Australian Junior Development Officer

On behalf of the Australian Eight Ball Federation, it is my privilege to attend the 13th Junior National 8 Ball
Championships as Junior Development Officer. It is always extra special to have your home state host these
Championships. We have 49 competitors from across Australia competing not only for the individual events,
but also the inaugural Team Championship.

I would like to thank Sue Whitten from Pool Victoria who has the dedication to help bring these
Championships to fruition. A very special thank you to Daryl Kee and the Forest Hill Chase Shopping Centre
for being incredibly supportive from the very first phone call. Thank you also to our major sponsor Mr Trevor
Attwell of Consolidated Leisure and Sport for their continued support to 8 ball throughout Australia. I would
also like to thank Mr George Taylor from Alcock, Thompson and Taylor for supplying these fantastic tables,
and for all his support to junior cuesports throughout the years. Chris Jolly from Workforce Financial Services
for the Sportsperson award, and also his commitment as Australian Junior Team Manager for this years World
Championships. A special thank you to the Tasmanian 8 Ball Council for kindly donating the inaugural Teams

On behalf of the Australian Eight-ball Federation and the Executive Committee, I welcome all competitors and
officials to Forest Hill Chase Shopping Centre for the 2003 Junior Australian Eight-ball Championships.

Each year I look forward. to this event as new young talent rises to National recognition. The Australian
Junior Team will be selected and five under 18 players wi11travel to The Junior World Titles in Blackpool
England in May 2003. This has become an integral part for the development of our elite young. players,
becoming future Champions.

At these Championships we can expect to enjoy enthusiasm and great sportsmanship which is always
pleasing to see in junior sports. Who wiIJ emerge as our 2003 Australian champions, which five players will
earn the green blazer to represent Australia, and have a chance at becoming World Eight-ball Junior
Champion as an individual or in the team event. Young Australians qualifying from these Nationals in the
past have done Australia proud, resulting in:-

A MESSAGE FROM THE AUSTRALIAN PRESIDENT

It is most encouraging to see, since the inception of the inaugural event in 1991,
the development and growth of our Junior competitors in Eight-Ball, in all age groups,
throughout Australia. The skill level and dedication has certainly made an impact to
senior competitors, administrators and the media, that can only prove rewarding in the
future.

To capture the comments from spectators who have witnessed our juniors
competinq is most satisfying, to say the least. The knowledge that already a good
number are now representing their respective State / Territory at senior level in both
Open and Ladies events is gratifying.

Congratulations to all juniors in each age group, you have won the right to
represent your State / Territory at National level in 1995. Best of luck to each and
everyone of you, may you enjoy your Eight-Ball and may you all continue on to
become future champions.

My heartiest congratulations must also go to the hardworking committee and
helpers of the ACT Eight-Ball Association, in what I am sure will be a smooth running
of your first National Eight-Ball event. One can only admire your efforts to make this
National event a memorable occasion for all concerned.

A MESSAGE FROM THE AUSTRALIAN 8-BALL PRESIDENT

As we turn back the pages of history, the Australian Inaugural Open
National a-Ball Events commenced in South Australia 10 years ago –
1984 and since then our sport throughout Australia has grown in leaps
and bounds. In 1989 we saw ladies introduced at national level and In
1991 the inaugural Australian Junior 8-Ball Championships
commenced in Victoria. In 1992 further progress – a junior competing
in open National Titles in Western Australia for the first time, and in
Northern Territory saw more juniors competing for more states at Open
National Level.

All of which is very encouraging to the junior development programmes
throughout Australia. In 1993 in Manchester, England the World 8-Ball
Championships (an inaugural event) of the World Eightball Pool
Federation. During the Annual General Meeting of this world body it
was decided that each country will be allowed two (2) juniors under the
age of 18 years to compete in the 1994 championships, a major
innovation to progress in such a short period of time. At the time of
writing, details are still to be finalised BUT Australia will be sending two
juniors to Manchester, England from these 1994 Australian Junior
Championships to compete in the World Championships under
international playing rules.

I would like further to thank the South Australian Junior Committee and
their many helpers for their time and effort in hosting this event, also to
the parents who have put in many hours and dollars to enable all
juniors to compete. Mayall your efforts be rewarding.

To those people who "have got behind the 8-Ball" and come forth with
valuable sponsorship dollars, 8-Ball is indebted to your generosity in
its quest for the future. If the 8-Ball fraternity get behind these
valuable sponsors – both can only be successful.

Best of luck to all the juniors, in all divisions, who have earned the right
to represent their state or territory at National Level. May you enjoy

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

It is with great pleasure the Australian Eight Ball Federation welcomes
all competitors and supporters to Melbourne for these
Australain Junior Eight Ball Championships of 1997.

We are very pleased to have all 8 States and Territories represented
here this year in Melbourne where it all started for
Juniors, Nationally, some years ago.
The extended event is sure to produce much exciting pool and
some future Senior Champions.

However, in the meantime, these Championhips will again produce
National Junior Champions in all 3 age groups and for the
first time Under 18’s will be invited to represent Australia in
South Africa and then England at the World Junior
Championships in May, 1997.

More important though is that all players try their best and enjoy
this special week of Junior Pool and new friends will be made
along the way. Our National “Juniors” Director, Mrs Jo Shrigley will be present
at the Championship all week and is only too happy to assist
you with any answers or support you may need.

I would like to thank our major sponsors Hainsworth Group of
Companies and Ansett Australia for their tremendous ongoing
support and point out we prefer and recommend Hainsworth
Cloth, Riley Cues and Red and Yellow Balls for competition play.
The national executive would like to thank Heather Zappia for

able to produce state champions to compete at National Junior level
requires many hours of dedication by a great number of people. To
the parents of our future champions, who have put forward many
dollars to enable their children to compete in the various pennant
matches and additional tournaments, allowing them to develop the
necessary skillsto reach this level, to you all, for your contributions, we
humbly thank you.

Furtherthanks and appreciation must also go to
the hardworking Western Australian Eight Ball Federation for their
efforts in preparing these 1993 National Junior 8-BallTitles.They have
left no stone unturned in their effort to make these 199~Junior Titles a
resounding success – as was achieved at the senior level in 1992- a
memorable occasion for all who participated.

Once again, my best wishesto all players. May you enjoy your 8-Ball
and if whilst competing, you are defeated, always be a true
sportsperson and congratulate your opponent. If you win, be gracious.
Mostly though, just enjoy this wonderful occasion and maybe,
in the not too distant future we will see you competing at National
Senior level. Who knows what the next step will then be.

A MESSAGE FROM THE AUSTRALIAN PRESIDENT

Congratulations to the Northern Territory 8 Ball Association, – who
having realised the potential of our young Australian players –
following the inaugural Junior Australian Titles held in Melbourne in
March of 1991 , quickly claimed for the Territory the right to host the
Titles in 1992.

That inaugural Junior Australian Titles in Melbourne – showed to all
who cared to attend – that juniors in the cloth sports have a lot to offer
and should not and can not be ignored.

All States and Territories of Australia are now aware of the talent in
this area and have or are developing training, coaching and Pennant for
our young players. Juniors have proved to be extremely competitive at
all levels – as some senior players have discovered. Furthermore their
demeanor and sportsmanship – at their age – is wonderful.

Staging an Australian Title is no mean feat, and thanks must go to the
N.T. Association, the Committee of the Top End Junior Association and
the many helpers and sponsors who have made the event possible.
Thanks too, for the many hours and dollars put in by the parents of
these future champions, in seeing they get to compete in various
tournaments, pennant games etc.

To the players – never forget – you are ambassadors of the sport, of
your parents and teachers – be a sportsperson first, if you are talented
or lucky enough to win – be gracious. If you are defeated look on it as
a avaluable learning experience – we must all learn to lose – to
appreciate how wonderful it is to win. Best of luck to you all.

MESSAGE FROM
THE AUSTRALIAN 8-BALL PRESIDENT

Congratulations to the Victorian Junior Cueists Association (VJCA) and all State
Junior committees in co-ordinating to stage this – the Inaugural Junior Australian
Titles – in Melbourne. A job well done.

Having myself been involved for some 20 years in the a-ball scene it is most
rewarding to witness – at last – so many Juniors becoming involved and
most of all enjoying the sport and competing – very competitively at all levels,
a standard that would put many senior players to shame.

Over the last few years 8-ball has grown so much in popularity and so many
people are coming to realise the game’s full potential and this will ensure
that it will lead to Olympic game recognition.

In the hear future, we trust it will receive official recognition and become part
of school curriculum for both boys and girls who wish to compete in sport
but do not wish to play a contact or physical sport as part of their school
sporting programme.

Schools and the Education Department now realise that the “cloth sports”
have so many benefits to offer young people that they cannot and should not
be ignored i.e. it’s a sport that can be played by both boys AND girls (as no
extra physical strength is required), it develops hand/eye co-ordination,
deportment, strategy (like in chess), Maths (numbers and angles), dress
standards, behaviour and most importantly, sportsmanship. Some players learn
(teach themselves) to be proficient with both left and right hand cueing action.
These and many other skills that will be beneficial well into adulthood.
Thanks must go also to the very many helpers and of course the sponsors
for all their efforts to make this inaugural event successful.
Best of luck to all entrants and I trust that in the future years we will witness
more junior participation in the cloths sports.
